Georgia will be watching five-star defensive lineman LJ McCray make his college decision known sometime later today.

McCray is set to decide between Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Miami on Saturday. Georgia got the No. 8 overall prospect in the On3 Rankings on campus back in the summer for an official visit.

McCray was in town back on June 16. He returned in July for an unofficial but hasn’t been back to Athens since that pair of visits.

On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine is trending toward the in-state Florida Gators at the moment. The Gators have a 36.8 percent chance of landing McCray at the moment.

McCray took his final official visit to Florida State two weekends ago. The Seminoles have joined Georgia as part of the picture alongside the Gators in recent weeks.

What did he say about Georgia?

McCray has only good things to say about Georgia. The five-star respects Georgia’s winning culture as well as the Bulldogs’ recent history of developing defensive linemen into NFL players.

“I definitely like Georgia, there’s not too much to not like about Georgia,” McCray said back on Aug. 23. “They’re super detailed and they’re winning. Those are two important things that I see out of Georgia…Georgia is definitely up there, but I feel like I’m kind of in love with all five of my top five schools right now. It’s going to be a super hard decision. I have relationships with all the coaching staffs. It’s going to be super hard to pick one of them.”

McCray is also a fan of Georgia defensive line coach Tray Scott and how he coaches the position. He also likes Scott’s approach to helping develop people.

“Coach (Tray) Scott being the man he is, he doesn’t let little things slip by,” McCray said. “I think that’s super important as well.”

McCray hasn’t been on campus in a while but his official visit was a big opportunity to feel out what living in Athens and playing for the Bulldogs would be like from a cultural standpoint.

“My OV was my second time being up there, so being able to connect with coach Scott was really big and building the relationship with the actual players was really a chill time,” McCray said in a previous interview.

The big picture for Georgia

McCray would likely play the five-technique for Georgia. The Bulldogs have five defensive linemen committed in the class of 2024.

McCray could be an early role player for the Dawgs should he land in Athens. Georgia has lost a lot of big names along the defensive front over the last few years.

An infusion of youth in the coming years appears to be a priority.
