Postseason play is here, and the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs take on Alabama for the conference title. It’s just the second time that both SEC Championship Game participants enter undefeated in league play, joining the classic 2009 title game between No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Alabama. The Crimson Tide, with Kirby Smart as their defensive coordinator, won and would go on to claim their first National Championship of the Nick Saban era.

Lots has happened between then and now. Smart is in Athens, coaching his alma mater. Saban’s run in Tuscaloosa has continued to produce incredible results. Oh, and of course Georgia has won a pair of National Championships too.

Here we are in the present where the top-10 showdown between the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide, the sixth meeting between Smart and Saban, has plenty on the line. For Georgia, a win – which would be their 30th in a row – would put them in the College Football Playoffs. Meanwhile, Alabama has to come out on top for a chance.

“Yeah, we wrapped up the regular season last night in Atlanta against Georgia Tech. Incredible atmosphere there at night. Very passionate rivalry game. That’s what college football is all about. I think everybody across the country or at least the southeast ends on that rivalry week. Usually a lot of emotions spent in those kind of games. That’s the tough thing about our conference and college football: you got to bounce right back and get ready to go play in a championship game,” Smart said on Sunday during the coaches’ call with both he and Saban. “It’s an opportunity that was earned by our team and this program. I know our players are certainly excited for the opportunity. I tell them all the time it’s one of the best venues, best atmospheres in all of sports. I’ve been very fortunate to be a part of it a lot of times. I know our guys are excited about the opportunity. We’ll have their full attention preparing for Alabama this week.”

Georgia and Alabama have met 72 all time, and the Crimson Tide are one of the few teams that actually hold an advantage over the Bulldogs. UGA however won the most recent meeting back in January of 2022, claiming the program’s first National Championship in over four decades with a 33-18 victory in Indianapolis.

“I think the two teams are very different,” Smart said when asked about using the last meeting as a source for confidence going into Saturday’s. “I mean you look at who they were then and who we were then. I don’t know that they could be the polar opposites in terms of what they do offensively, and even us from a standpoint and who we were defensively then. So I don’t think the two — not a lot — in college football today, not a lot of players that played in that game are playing in this game. If they did, they were probably a minor role.”

Quarterback Carson Beck leads a Georgia offense that’s top-10 in the country both for scoring (No. 8, 39.6 points per game) and total yards (No. 6, 496.4 yards per game). Individually, Beck has been equally as impressive, finding himself top-10 in several statistical categories. He could however be without a some of his top targets this weekend as Ladd McConkey, Rara Thomas and Brock Bowers all missed last Saturday’s game at Georgia Tech. That could mean a heavier dose of the ground game with Daijun Edwards and Kendall Milton – a strategy that worked well against the Yellow Jackets – or more pressure put on the likes of Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Dominic Lovett and Dillon Bell.

On the flip side of things, Georgia’s defense is also strong. While the Bulldogs have given up the game’s first score in six straight games, they’ve done a great job of letting the early scores not affect the rest of the game. Kirby Smart’s squad is No. 6 for scoring defense, giving up just 15.8 points per game, and No. 9 in the NCAA for total defense (294.3 yards per game). Last year’s leading tackler Smael Mondon picked up where he left off as the linebacker is once again near the top of the leaderboard with 60 tackles, only passed by by Tykee Smith. He’s got 63 to go along with 4 interceptions. Others to watch when the Georgia defense is on the field include Nagurski Trophy finalist for the nation’s top defender Malaki Starks, Kamari Lassiter and a veteran group up front that helps hold things down.
