Marvin Jones Jr. makes decision on destination out of transfer portal

Georgia transfer Marvin Jones Jr. has his next spot picked out. The outside linebacker from South Florida is set to return to his home state and play for Mike Norvell and the Seminoles at Florida State.

Jones is the son of a Florida State legend, Marvin’s father was a two-time All-American linebacker and winner of the 1992 Butkus and Lombardi Awards before going on to play 11 seasons in the NFL for the New York Jets.

In two seasons at Georgia, Jones solidified an established role for himself in the outside linebacker room. After an injury to Nolan Smith in 2022, he saw an uptick in snaps, playing in all 13 games that season despite have a torn labrum that would require surgery after the season. Then, in 2023, he appeared in 12 of the team’s 13 including a start in the SEC Championship Game against Alabama. Combined, Jones totaled 16 tackles including 5.5 tackles for loss with the majority of the production coming during his second season on campus.

Jones, listed at 6-foot-4, 253 pounds, was a five-star coming out of high school and the No. 20 overall player in the country according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He chose Georgia over the likes of Alabama, USC and Florida State.

Jones will have two years of eligibility remaining at Florida State. He is one of 17 Georgia players to enter the transfer portal during the December opening. Of those, seven have now decided on their new schools. A full list can be found below.

Georgia takes on Florida State in the upcoming Capital One Orange Bowl in Jones’ hometown of Miami, Fla. The matchup features the first two teams left out of the College Football Playoffs as the undefeated Seminoles are ranked fifth and 12-1 Georgia is No. 6. Just under two weeks out from the game, the Bulldogs are listed as a 14-point favorite over Florida State according to Vegas Insider. Kickoff time on December 30th is set for 4:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
