KSO Show: The Avery Johnson Era begins, plus bowl scenarios for Kansas State

After two seasons leading one of the best offenses in college football, offensive coordinator Collin Klein has taken the offensive coordinator job at Texas A&M and is opting to leave Kansas State via multiple reports and confirmed by KSO.

We learned on Tuesday evening the Aggies offered Klein the role. Now the 34 year old has accepted the position in College Station to work for new head coach Mike Elko.

Klein has been a wanted man in his two seasons at K-State. He turned down the Notre Dame offensive coordinator job last season. Already this offseason Klein had turned down the Penn State job. The Nittany Lions eventually hired Andy Kotelnicki from Kansas.

Klein led a very efficient Kansas State offense this season. The Wildcats ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 in points per drive in conference play with 3.16 and No. 1 in touchdown rate.

The former Heisman Trophy finalist has also been the quarterbacks coach at K-State since 2017. Under his time working for the Wildcats quarterbacks Skylar Thompson was drafted in the seventh round by the Miami Dolphins.

In his time with the Dolphins, Thompson has started two games and played in seven in his career. Klein has also been part of the development of Will Howard. This season, Howard was named to the All-Big 12 second team and was the first All-Big 12 selection under Klein.

The Colorado native has also been key on the recruiting trail for Kansas State. During his time in Manhattan, Klein has signed four-star quarterbacks Jake Rubley, Avery Johnson and Thompson.

This season, Johnson played in seven games for K-State and won Big 12 Freshman of the Week for his five-touchdown performance against Texas Tech. Johnson is also in line to make his first start at quarterback for Kansas State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on December 28.
