John Calipari Talks Win Over Illinois State

Kentucky currently has five players in the 2024 recruiting class. Before Christmas, Billy Richmond (No. 21 overall) joined the fold to give the Wildcats three top-25 prospects joining Jayden Quaintance (No. 8 overall) and Boogie Fland (No. 22 overall), according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Head coach John Calipari has another top-five recruiting haul and is chasing after the No. 1 spot.

Up in Indiana this week, the La Porte Invitational is taking place on Thursday night. Calipari and assistant coach Chin Coleman are making a quick pitstop before making their first SEC road trip to Gainesville over the weekend to kickoff conference play.

Class of 2024 five-star guard VJ Edgecombe is the top attraction at the event, but he is not the only top-10 prospect participating at the La Porte Invitational. Darius Acuff is a top-10 prospect in the class of 2025 and the junior appears to be Kentucky’s top point guard target in that cycle. Recruiting never stops.

Calipari and his staff is looking to close on a couple of blue-chippers on the road before the college basketball season heats back up this weekend.

VJ Edgecombe is down to 5

During December’s City of Palms Classic semifinal matchup on ESPNU, Paul Biancardi revealed on the air that Edgecombe is down to just five schools — Kentucky, Duke, Baylor, Florida, and St. John’s — before adding that the native of class of 2024 prospect is inching closer to making a final decision.

“This season, that’s all I’m gonna tell you. This season, that’s all I got for y’all,” Biancardi was told by Edgecombe. Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog first reported the news.

Kentucky assistant coach Chuck Martin was in attendance at the event to recruit Edgecombe. Now John Calipari and Chin Coleman are checking in on the five-star recruit just over a week later. Edgecombe is a priority recruit for Kentucky and he is currently getting the red carpet treatment from the Wildcats on the recruiting trail.
