The University of Miami’s secondary needed help following the departure of starting cornerbacks Tyrique Stevenson and DJ Ivey, and they received that much-needed assistance from a familiar name after landing former UCF DB Davonte Brown, the son of former Hurricane DB Selwyn Brown, a national championship winner at ‘The U’.

“I feel like that’s crazy because we still watch some old film from him,” Davonte told Canesport. “I know he wanted me to come here out of high school, but things worked out how they did. But just for me to come back and be here now, at the same school my dad played at, is awesome. And bringing my little brother too, that’s special.”

Davonte transferred to Miami following a three-year stint at UCF, where he totaled 90 tackles, 18 pass breakups, and three interceptions, choosing Miami over FSU.

“It was a hard decision between Miami and Florida State,” Davonte said. “But having that chance to come back and play with my brother, change things around here, be that young mature leader in the DB room, help guys around me, build the program back, that’s why I chose Miami.”

Davonte had to choose between Miami, UCF, and Pittsburgh during his initial recruitment process, and we all know how that turned out. This time, according to Davonte, the coaching staff was the main reason he chose Miami this time around.

“The biggest change now is the coaches,” Davonte said. “Some of them are still there, but obviously (Mario) Cristobal wasn’t there playing a big part in recruiting. I like what he’s trying to do. He’s trying to bring in like-minded guys who are going to be ready to work so we can go out there and win on Saturdays.”

Davonte continued by detailing what Cristobal had done specifically this time and what sort of recruiter he was.

“I’d say just how he’s been on a roll,” Davonte added. “He came to our house, and he hasn’t stopped. He’s been on the road trying to get guys committed who want to be ‘Canes and not just wear the orange and green, but are ready to really represent ‘The U’. Just his nonstop willingness to find those guys, I feel like that makes him different.”

As far as playing with his younger brother, Damari Brown, a four-star defensive back who chose Miami over Alabama and FSU, Davonte called it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and is excited to take this next step in his journey with his little brother by his side.

“I’ve been through college, so I know what to expect,” Davonte said. “Just having him come along with me, I will be able to teach him everything I know and have him prepared. I’m not going to lead him the wrong way, and he’s going to have that extra advantage. I’m excited to play with him; we’ve been really close growing up and do everything together.”
