Six months ago, Miami’s recruiting effort for Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas four-star running back Jordan Lyle was next to minimal. But after turning up the heat on the No. 40 prospect in the On300 this fall, the Hurricanes signed the No. 2 running back in the 2024 class Wednesday just two days after announcing his flip from Ohio State.

Yes, he’s confirmed signing his Miami papers.

Lyle’s flip late Monday evening wasn’t quite inevitable, but there was plenty of reason for optimism after the 6-foot, 190-pound running back and his family were thoroughly impressed by the Hurricanes following last weekend’s official visit. Lyle sat down with his family Monday to discuss their options — to stick with an Ohio State program he committed to in late April — or give Miami yet another blue-chip prospect in a loaded 2024 recruiting class vying for a top-five finish.

Lyle formally completed his flip to Miami today when he signed with the Hurricanes, and he told CaneSport before his announcement he felt he could receive the same opportunities at both schools.

“I know with my type of work ethic it doesn’t really matter which school I go to, because I’m going to end up working to go to the NFL and that’s the goal,” Lyle said. “Obviously my family will value (the opportunity to stay close to home at Miami), but whether it’s staying home or going away, they’re still going to be in attendance and showing love, so (staying home) weighs a factor, but at the same time, not as much.”

Lyle was attracted to the idea of competing for playing time early at Miami after seeing freshman running back Mark Fletcher’s production in his first season, and his Miami commit teammates at St. Thomas (four-star receiver Chance Robinson and three-star defensive backs Ryan Mack and OJ Frederique) continued to recruit him to Coral Gables.

He told CaneSport earlier in the year when Miami’s recruiting intensity increased he didn’t feel his teammates would steer him wrong when the trio told him he should seriously consider the Hurricanes, and Miami steadily climbed throughout the fall before landing his commitment early this week.

Lyle will be a summer enrollee.

CaneSport’s Take

This marks the second straight year Miami stole a top running back from Ohio State after nabbing Fletcher a season ago, which should offer Hurricane fans reason to smile given the Buckeyes swiped some of the country’s top receivers from Miami’s backyard in consecutive years (four-star Brandon Inniss in 2023 and No. 1 prospect Jeremiah Smith in 2024).
