Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 35 days until 2022 season
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
Michigan football finds itself 35 days away from the 2022 season opener vs. Colorado. Today’s countdown shoutout comes to one of the best defensive backs in school history. No. 35 Thom Darden is the player of the day here.
Darden was born in Sandusky, Ohio and enrolled at Michigan in 1969. During his time in Ann Arbor, he racked up 218 tackles and 11 interceptions, which in part helped him earn All-American honors in 1971 and an All-Big Ten nod in 1970.
His performance against Ohio State in 1971 is an all-time moment in Michigan history. Late in the game, Darden pulled in an interception that drew the ire of Woody Hayes, who stormed the field to get in the ear of the official, arguing pass interference. Hayes was so update that he broke a yard marker, ripped a first-down indicator and earned a pair of 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalities. It was the second of two Darden picks in the game.
Darden would go on to have a storied NFL career, being selected in the first round by the Cleveland Browns in 1972. He was a three-time All-Pro selection and grabbed 45 interceptions in his 10-year career.
