There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

Michigan football has 31 days until the 2022 season opener against Colorado State. Today brings about a look at how last season’s 31-10 over Washington helped set the tone for the rest of the 2021 campaign.

Sept. 11, 2021 – the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks – was a memorable day in Ann Arbor. Michigan’s game against Washington was set for a primetime kick, giving fans the opportunity to take advantage of a picturesque weather day to tailgate and soak in the sights and sounds. That also included plenty of libation consumption, among other traditional tailgate traditions.

Before fans had even taken to the Michigan Stadium gates, the hated rival Ohio State Buckeyes dropped a 35-28 game to Oregon at home. There was jaded optimism around Ann Arbor going into the year, but OSU looking mortal seemed to open people up to the idea that the Buckeyes were beatable. It cracked the door open for optimism among the Maize and Blue faithful.

Once the party moved into the Big House, Michigan took care of its business over the Huskies, even if it was not sexy. A 31-10 win was picked apart by fans despite 343 yards rushing and a bludgeoning of Washington. How could the team get ready for the Buckeyes if its quarterback went only 7-for-15? We would later see how that turned out.

Blake Corum ran for 171 yards and three touchdowns, while Hassan Haskins added 155 yards of his own and a rushing score. Michigan scored the first 17 points of the game before Washington got things closer at 24-10 with 12 minutes remaining. Corum’s third touchdown with 1:48 remaining sealed the win.

Michigan would go on to keep finding its groove and chipping away through the year, eventually beating Ohio State, winning the Big Ten title over Iowa and taking on Georgia in the College Football Playoff. There were plenty of things that predated the Washington game that helped lead to a title. Plenty happened after it. But for one night in Ann Arbor, the vibes were nearly immaculate.
