There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

It’s hard to believe we’re less than one month until Michigan’s 2022 season begins. When the Wolverines do take the field, the offense in particular will look similar to last season. Same set of quarterbacks, same group of receivers, same crop of tight ends, three of five starting offensive linemen intact. One noticeable difference, however, is that running back Hassan Haskins won’t be fighting for extra yards.

Haskins finished his career with 30 career touchdown runs, which is tied with Billy Taylor (1969-71) and Tom Harmon (1938-40) for eighth in Michigan history. Anthony Thomas‘ (1997-2000) 55 scores lead the way for the Wolverines all time.

Twenty of Haskins’ scores came during the 2021 season, with that mark standing as the single-season program record. He passed Ron Johnson‘s 19 (1968) during the Big Ten championship game, and the contest that put him right in contention was his five-touchdown outing in a 42-27 win over Ohio State the week prior.

Michigan has a pair of running backs who could hit that 30-touchdown mark at some point in their careers in junior Blake Corum and sophomore Donovan Edwards.

Corum ran for 11 scores in 12 games last season and is up to 14 for his career. He’s a candidate to leave early for the NFL Draft following this upcoming campaign, but if he stays one more year, he’d be a safe bet to vault into the top 10 at least (he’d need 27 career rushing touchdowns to do so).

Edwards has three rushing touchdowns so far, but he didn’t play a very large role as a freshman last fall. Now, he’ll split time with Corum (and play alongside him in the backfield), and he’s got three more years of eligibility to pump those numbers up.

Michigan has two budding stars at the position, but Haskins — his power, in particular — will still be missed. He racked up 825 of his 1,327 yards after contact, with that mark ranking 13th in the country, and led the country with 103 first-down runs. That’s 18 more first downs than the next-highest Power Five back, Oregon‘s Travis Dye.

Here’s a look back at some of Haskins’ top runs from last season.
