Newsstand: Detroit Lions get in trouble for turning in Aidan Hutchinson pick too fast
Tweets Of The Day
In the ‘hilarious news of the day’ category … the Detroit Lions were scolded by the NFL for turning in their No. 2 overall draft choice for Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson too quickly after the Jacksonville Jaguars selected former Georgia defensive end Travon Walker at No. 1 overall.
The Lions had 10 minutes to let the NFL know who they were going to select with their pick. As it turns out though, the Lions didn’t need 10 minutes to make their pick. As a matter of fact, they barely needed 60 seconds to select Aidan Hutchinson out of Michigan.
According to Peter King of NBC Sports, the Lions turned their draft card in “within a minute” of Walker being selected. The Lions made their pick so quickly that the NFL was actually upset about it.
“We turned the card in so fast the league got mad at us,” a Lions official told King.
There were only two minutes between when the NFL announced the first and second pick on Twitter (To put that in perspective, there were six minutes between the announcement of Hutchinson and the announcement of the third overall pick, Derek Stingley Jr., who went to the Texans).
Boy, were they excited about selecting the former Michigan star.
Two Michigan basketball sophomores — Caleb Houstan, a 6-8, 205-pound wing, and Moussa Diabate, a 6-10, 210-pound forward — are going through the NBA Draft process, and the latter received big news Tuesday. According to Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog, Diabate has earned an invited to the NBA Draft Combine May 18-20 in Chicago. He’s the first Michigan standout to be invited to the showcase since Ignas Brazdeikis and Jordan Poole in the summer of 2019. Both Wolverines stayed in the draft that year.
Big Ten Network threw it back to Michigan’s famous ‘train formation’ that it used back in 2016. The play in the video below resulted in a touchdown pass from quarterback Wilton Speight to tight end Jake Butt in a 41-8 thumping of Illinois Oct. 22, 2016.
