2024 Mississippi State commit Tyler Carter and his Vicksburg High School teammates have experienced several close wins and close losses this fall. But through it all, Carter and company were able to reach the Class 5A postseason.

The On3 three-star defensive end was a big part of that journey to the playoffs, which ended last Friday with a first-round loss at Grenada High School. For the season, the 6-foot-5 and 250-pound Carter totaled 72 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and one fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.

“It has been and up and down year,” explained Carter. “We had to come from behind a lot this year but we got it done in most games and got to the playoffs. I mainly played defensive end and defensive tackle this year and I feel like I am stronger and faster off the ball. I have used my hands better and I am also reading plays better.”

Carter is rated as the nation’s No. 51 edge and the state’s No. 15 prospect by On3. He committed to Mississippi State in late June and noted of his commitment status with the Bulldogs.

“Everything is real smooth with State and there’s been nothing bad,” Carter said. “I am still locked in with them and Coach (David) Turner still checks on me every day. He is always giving me tips about how to play on the defensive line and I appreciate that.”

During his recent conversations with Turner, Carter has been able to gain some insight to his possible future position with the Bulldogs on the defensive front.

“We’ve talked about my position some but it depends on how big I get,” mentioned Carter. “But I am guessing I will probably be at the three-tech. I will play wherever they need me to play, though. I am 250 pounds now so I will probably get around 270-275 when I play at State.”

This season Carter has been a regular visitor to Davis Wade Stadium. He has enjoyed being in that atmosphere while also getting a glimpse of the Bulldogs’ defensive system in the trenches.

“I’ve been to several games there and it’s been electric,” Carter recalled. “I love hearing all of the cowbells and their fans, and it really feels like home. I feel like their defense is getting better and the defense they run is similar to what we do at Vicksburg except State takes away a defensive lineman on their front.”

Since committing to State during the summer, Carter mentioned that his recruiting process has been a quiet one. And that suits him just fine.

“Recruiting really slowed down completely,” added Carter. “It’s been like that since I committed but to me, that’s been a good thing because I know where I want to be.”
