NC State linebacker Daejuan Thompson to enter transfer portal

Daejuan Thompson, a former four-star recruit, plans to enter the transfer portal. The NC State redshirt freshman linebacker announced his decision on social media Monday evening.
He appeared in one game this season, playing 9 kick coverage snaps against Marshall. After signing with the Wolfpack out of Whiteville (N.C.) High in the 2022 class, he appeared in 6 total contests, all on special teams.
Thompson shared his announcement on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
“First off I’ll like to say I appreciate all the coaches and staff that have invested in me to become a better man and player,” Thompson said. “With that being said I will be entering the transfer portal with three years of eligibility left.”
During the 2023 season, he did not record a stat. Thompson recorded 3 total tackles (2 solo) and forced a fumble against Virginia Tech as a freshman. He played exclusively on the kickoff coverage unit that season.
On3 considered Thompson a four star prospect, ranking him as the No. 37 linebacker in the nation and the No. 13 recruit in North Carolina’s 2022 class.
He joined:
*** Defensive back Darius Edmundson
*** Wide receiver Anthony Smith
*** Tight end Christopher Toudle
*** Running back Jordan Houston
*** Running back Michael Allen

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.
Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.
The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.
A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
