NC State redshirt junior defensive back Darius Edmundson will enter the transfer portal when it opens, he announced via social media Tuesday afternoon.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank God for all the continuous blessings and opportunities that I’ve experienced over the years to mold me into the man I am today,” Edmudson wrote. “To my brothers, I’m forever grateful for the memories and relationships we have built together. I can truly say that you all had my back no matter what.”

“To the coaches and support staff, I genuinely appreciate each of you for pushing me every day to pursue excellence,” he continued. “With that being said, after much consideration and prayer, I will be entering my name into the transfer portal after this season with 1 year of eligibility left.”

Edmundson, a former transfer from Louisburg College, played in three games this season, and recorded one tackle against VMI in a season-best six snaps. He played on special teams only in the Wolfpack’s season opener at UConn, and recorded one snap against Notre Dame. Edmundson appeared in four games last season, all on special teams.

At Louisburg, Edmudson played in two games during the 2021 season. He redshirted the 2019 season after he was injured.

Edmundson did not start playing football until his junior season at Southern Nash High School, where he graduated with former NC State running back Zonovan Knight. Edmundson recorded six interceptions as a senior, and also had a pair of kickoff return touchdowns at Southern Nash.

He is the younger brother of Dwayne Herndon, who played on the defensive line at NC State between 2003-05.

Edmundson is the second player to leave the Wolfpack mid-season. He joins running back Jordan Houston, who is redshirting the rest of the season. Houston is expected to put his name in the transfer portal once it opens at the conclusion of the season.

Like Houston’s departure, Edmundson’s transfer takes some of the depth away from NC State’s roster. He was listed as a nickel this season, providing support to the Pack’s position that is led by Old Dominion transfer Robert Kennedy III
