NC State dropped its contest to Duke 24-3, the Pack’s lowest scoring output since 2014. The Blue Devils are ranked No. 16 nationally, and On3 considers them the No. 3 team in the ACC.

Following the loss, the Wolfpack dropped two spots in On3’s weekly ACC Power Rankings. NC State now sits at No. 10, between No. 9 Wake Forest and No. 11 Syracuse.

“Speaking of offenses that are struggling, NC State managed only 3 points at Duke, while falling to 0-2 in its past two games against Power 5 teams,” On3 wrote. “The Wolfpack went from Brennan Armstrong to MJ Morris at quarterback, but thus far, the switch hasn’t helped much.

“If you were simply looking at the box score, you would think NC State won or was at least competitive against Duke. The Wolfpack had more total yards, more first downs and controlled time of possession. But it didn’t matter thanks to costly mistakes, including 11 penalties for 87 yards.”

NC State fell into a three-score deficit early in the second half and had to rely on Morris’ arm throughout the night. He completed 24 of 40 passes for 193 yards, while also leading the team in rushing on 14 carries for 38 yards.

Graduate student linebacker Payton Wilson paced the Wolfpack with 11 tackles. He was the only defender to finish with more than 4 stops. After the game, Wilson called for the team to play tougher on the field.

The Pack’s next two contests after the bye week will be against Clemson, the No. 4 team in the power rankings and No. 6 Miami.

NC State quote of the day

This quote is from Wolfpack wrestling head coach Pat Popolizio.

“We came here, obviously, to compete at an elite level and to win at the highest level,” Popolizio said. “The ultimate goal has always been to win a national title, and we haven’t done that yet. I know our coaching staff remains hungry, and we continue to embrace that with the guys that are out there competing for us.”
