NC State redshirt sophomore running back Micah Crowell retired from football, he announced on Instagram Friday afternoon.

“First off I’d like to thank Coach Doeren and the coaching staff for granting me the opportunity to play football at the collegiate level,” Crowell wrote. “I’ve built lifelong relationships with numerous teammates, coaches and support staff that have impacted me greatly and I will be forever grateful. Many injuries, smiles, laughs & tears but I’m thankful for it all and I don’t regret not one bit.”

“With much prayer and deliberation, I have decided to retire from the game of football as I endeavor to devote the remainder of my life to ministry and to further the advancement of the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” he continued. “The mission still remains the same and that’s lifting up his name. It don’t matter if my name gets deleted, what remains is the mission.”

Crowell was a four-star recruit out of East Forsyth High School, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He held offers from almost every Power Five program in the country, including Alabama and Ohio State, but the Winston-Salem, N.C., native picked the Wolfpack.

He committed to NC State as a cornerback, but dealt with injuries during his time in Raleigh. Crowell redshirted the 2021 season as he recovered from a high school injury. He moved to running back during the 2022 season, but sat out with an injury and did not see any action.

Crowell did not see any action through NC State’s first seven games this season, either.

The running back is the third player to leave the team this season, but the first to retire from football. Senior running back Jordan Houston and redshirt junior nickel Darius Edmundson both elected to redshirt the rest of the season, and will enter the transfer portal when it opens.

Crowell is the younger brother of Isaiah Crowell, who is currently a redshirt freshman cornerback with the Pack.

With injuries plaguing his entire collegiate career, Crowell decided to hang up his cleats without ever playing a down in an NC State uniform.

He wrapped up his retirement announcement with his goal for the rest of his life: serving God.

“Football don’t need me, the dream of playing in the NFL don’t need me,” Crowell wrote. “The kingdom agenda must go forward and I fully dedicate my life to serving God with my all. I am both humbled and excited to pursue the holy call that God has for my life which brings me so much joy that the world can’t take away. There’s Joy only in Christ. Take me out of the picture, it’s about his name only.”
