Nebraska has added a sixth defensive back to the 2024 class, and the summer camps continue to pay off for Matt Rhule and his staff. Rex Guthrie, from Littleton (Colo.) Heritage camped at Nebraska this summer and picked up the offer following a standout performance and excellent testing numbers.

The Huskers have added another defensive back to the class. Rex Guthrie committed the weekend of his official visit to Nebraska. The weekend back in Lincoln was to get another chance to be around the coaches and get a feel for the staff.

“The visit was really great getting a chance to spend some time with the coaches,” Guthrie said. “I just wanted to spend more time with the coaches and get to know them better on my visit.”

Guthrie earned an offer from Nebraska on June 15th following a terrific camp performance. The 6-foot-1 and 205-pound defensive back ran a 4.43-second 40-yard dash. He also jumped 10-foot-4 in the broad jump and had a 4.14-second pro agility.

“The coaches and the culture there, it’s incredible,” Guthrie said. “Coach Cooper and Coach White and the whole defensive staff mainly.”

There have been a couple of successful camps for Guthrie this summer. On June 10th, he was in Laramie and performed similarly for Wyoming, running a 4.47-second 40-yard dash. He also picked up an offer from the Cowboys following camp.

Nebraska has five defensive back commitments, but with the Huskers moving to the 3-3-5, a higher quantity of defensive backs will be taken annually than what Nebraska fans are typically used to. Plus, some of the commits being called defensive backs may change positions.

Guthrie joins Roger Gradney from Altair (Texas) A&M Consolidated, Mario Buford from DeSoto (Texas), Evan Taylor from Waxhaw (N.C.) Cuthbertson, Braylen Prude from Pearland (Texas) Shadow Creek, and Donovan Jones from Omaha (Neb.) North.

The expectation is that Nebraska would look at Guthrie to play one of the safety positions in the secondary with the 3-3-5. Guthrie was a very active safety as a junior for his Littleton (Colo.) Heritage team last year.

“They see me playing one of the three safety positions,” Guthrie said. “I am not sure which one yet. It means everything to me that the coaches at Nebraska saw what I see in myself.

“Coach Cooper told me that he didn’t care about any of the rankings because from my film and my camp he knew that I had it. He said that’s all that mattered to him and he said that he can’t wait to work with me.”

Nebraska plays in Boulder, Colo. this fall on September 9th. Guthrie is aware of the game. He is also aware of the ticket prices for the game right now.

“The tickets are pretty expensive! I am going to try, but I don’t know. Hopefully, I can. I plan to make it back to as many home games as possible this fall.”

As a junior, Guthrie had 117 tackles, three interceptions, 12 passes broken up, and nine tackles for loss. He was named to the all-Colorado team, was league special teams player of the year, first-team all-league defensive back, and academic all-state.
