Mario Buford was one of nine official visitors for the first weekend in June for Nebraska and is committing ahead of two scheduled official visits to Big Ten schools. The four-star cornerback from DeSoto (Texas) will join his brother on the team, Marques Buford, and in the defensive secondary at Nebraska in January after he graduates high school at mid-term.

Nebraska and Matt Rhule have landed their top secondary target, Mario Buford, in the 2024 class. Buford is rated as a four-star by On3 and is ranked as the No. 20 cornerback in the country, the No. 144 player overall, and the No. 29 player in Texas.

Buford took six visits to Nebraska before choosing the Huskers. His sixth visit was his official visit last weekend. That visit was critical because it effectively shut everything down for Buford ahead of planned official visits to Michigan State on the 9th and Penn State on the 23rd.

Mario Buford will play all spots in secondary, but plan on seeing him at boundary corner first for Nebraska

The Huskers see Buford playing everywhere in their secondary as a defensive back. However, you can plan on seeing Mario figure into the picture immediately for Nebraska as a boundary corner where he can put that 5-foot-11.5 frame to work to go along with his 75.5″ wingspan that helps him play taller than he already is.

Buford becomes the eighth player in the 2024 class for Nebraska, of which four players are from Texas. Buford is the first player from the Dallas area, with the other players coming from southern Texas in the Houston area (Gibson Pyle and Ian Flynt) or central Texas (Roger Gradney).

Nebraska hosted four defensive backs from Texas the first weekend in June, which could be useful following Buford’s commitment to Nebraska. The Huskers could fill up quickly if they can get William Nettles, Peyton Morgan, and Dontae Carter to join Buford in Lincoln. Nebraska also hosted Amare Sanders this weekend, and he is also trending to Nebraska.

The Husker staff is wrapping up a week in Texas, bringing them to Belton, Texas, for a satellite camp at Mary Hardin Baylor, and on Tuesday, they were in Houston at Houston Christian. Nebraska got Malik Esquerra to visit with them on Monday, and Esquerra is now scheduled to visit Nebraska from June 13th – 15th.
