When Matt Rhule took over at Nebraska, he immediately said that if you performed well at one of their camps, they would offer you a scholarship. Omaha North’s Donovan Jones proved that on Saturday.

The 6-foot 1/2, 185-pound Jones camped at NU Friday. The 2024 prospect quickly earned an offer from Wyoming, and on Saturday, the Huskers followed.

“They offered me around noon today,” Jones told HuskerOnline on Saturday. “I talked to (Evan Cooper) first, and we just chopped it up and then handed the phone to Coach Rhule.

“Me and him were talking. It was a funny story. I was coming back from a workout, and I was in an Iowa State t-shirt. He told me to call him back when I get a Husker t-shirt on. So I threw a shirt on, called him back, and he offered me right after that.”

Jones was the second 2024 DB NU offered at Friday’s camps

Friday’s camps were once again big for new offers. Jones was one of two 2024 defensive backs NU offered.

The Huskers also offered Littleton (Colo.) Heritage safety Rex Guthrie after a strong showing at camp in the afternoon. Jones’ workout came in the evening.

“Nebraska just saw my junior year tape, and originally they just said they wanted to see my senior year tape,” Jones said. “I went to their camp, and the coaches saw how I performed and what I did during the drills and how my feet were moving.”

NU is recruiting Jones as a safety, but he can play anywhere in the secondary.

He ran 4.52 in the 40-yard and went 10-0 in the broad jump. At South Dakota State’s camp earlier this summer, he went 10-5 1/2 in the broad jump. Earlier this year, Viking head coach Larry Martin gave his thoughts on Jones during the In-State Tour event.

“He’s just going to continue to get better. He tests very well,” Martin said. “He came to the Warren Academy camp and has generated a lot of interest.

“Just getting that experience of playing last year was big. He will be very good on the defensive side of the football for us.”
