OU basketball lands initial 2026 commitment, Gage Mayfield

September has been and will continue to be a massive visit month for OU basketball. A couple of guys two weeks ago. Two big names last weekend. That’s nice ‘n all to be in the conversation. However, when was one going to hit?
That wait is over. OU is on the board for the 2026 class with the commitment of Moundville (Ala.) Hale County wing Gage Mayfield, who announced Thursday afternoon.
Mayfield took his official visit to Norman last weekend. Going into the visit? It sure looked like Florida State was in the driver’s seat. But after the OU trip, Mayfield canceled a trek to Michigan and decided to make the call.
Mayfield, listed at 6-foot-7 and 190 pounds, is ranked No. 64 overall in the Composite Rankings. And he’s the No. 1-ranked prospect in Alabama. He is a consensus top-100 recruit from all recruiting services.
It was obvious that Porter Moser and the Sooners had made the right impression. The word to use for Mayfield? Upside. OU is ready to take a risk and say the best days for Mayfield are well ahead of him. And multiple sources pointing toward assistant coach Brock Morris in helping turn this around so quickly.

Moser has never had any issues recruiting elite high school prospects since taking over at OU. And the transfer portal haul of last spring might be the best one yet for the Sooners.
There is a ton of momentum right now in Norman. And a strong feeling that Mayfield won’t be the lone commitment of what has been a busy, busy September.
On3 says…
Mayfield’s recruiting process was a unique one to track. At this point, last year, he was unranked across the board. He used the Under Armour Next platform this summer, playing with the Pro One organization to firmly place himself on the national radar. He added his first high-major offer in April. He ended up adding 11 high-major offers between the end of April and June. That three-month time frame shaped his recruiting process.
The piece of Mayfield’s game that sticks out regularly is his defensive presence. At a length 6-foot-8, he has intriguing instincts to go along with athletic pop. He slides his feet, gets in the passing lanes, and is an effective weak side shot blocker as he rotates down a lineup. His offensive game showed promise in the matchup against Washington. Mayfield knocked down a three and attacked the basket off ball reversals in a straight line. He needs to continue to refine the offensive game, but he is consistently finding production on the floor. – Jamie Shaw
