Bo Nix says he will wait until end of season to decide on future plans

It’s apparent at this point that Oregon’s offense is going to look very, very different in 2023.

The Ducks will have a new offensive coordinator next season. Their veteran-heavy offensive line is going to lose most of its starters to graduation and the NFL Draft.

What that all means for star quarterback Bo Nix, though, is still unclear.

Nix met with reporters following No. 9 Oregon’s shocking loss to No. 22 Oregon State in Corvallis on Saturday and was asked if he has made a decision on whether he will return to Oregon next year for his fifth college season.

“After a game like this it’s important; our season is not over with,” Nix said. “Whatever the next game is going to be, whenever we find that out, we’ll be looking forward to that next game. Kind of the way college football goes is a lot of things change from season to season so you can’t worry about that until the season is completed and finished. There’s still some football left to play.”

Even after Saturday’s disastrous result, Oregon could still potentially play for a conference title next week.

If Washington State defeats No. 12 Washington in Pullman on Saturday, the Ducks will earn a spot in the Dec. 2 Pac-12 championship game in Las Vegas.

A Huskies’ win, though, would knock Oregon out of contention and shatter its Rose Bowl hopes in the process.

In the modern era of college football, it’s common for star players to opt out of bowl games and set their sights on preparing for the NFL Draft.

Nix isn’t making any concrete decisions at this point, though.

“I think it depends on each individual’s personal goals,” Nix said. “Some guys are ready to go off and leave college. Some guys enjoy college football and like to stay. In my opinion, there’s no right or wrong answer it’s based on each individual guy. Some guys are comfortable leaving. Some guys would rather stay.

“I’m just trying to finish out the season and whatever’s next, go out there and perform at a high level.”

In 12 games this season, Nix has thrown for 3,388 yards on 71.5% passing. He has thrown for 27 touchdowns and six interceptions, run for 14 touchdowns, and also caught one touchdown.

He suffered a right ankle injury near the end of Oregon’s loss to Washington two weeks ago and his mobility has been hindered in each of the Ducks’ last two games.

“I thought he felt comfortable at times. I think he’ll come back here and tell you that he missed a couple of passes that he wished he could have had,” Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said when asked about Nix’s performance. “There are some moments; he probably wouldn’t have pulled it on the fourth down. I think if he handed that he’d feel a lot better. That being said, Bo’s been a consistent leader for us all year. He’s playing in a tough situation right now. He’s shown a lot of heart to do that.

“He’s been our leader all year and certainly proud of him and his effort.”
