Penn State now has a five-star verbal commitment in its Class of 2023.

On3 awarded Jven Williams a fifth star on Thursday.

The Reading, Pa., Wyomissing offensive lineman previously held a four-star rating from On3. He was ranked as the nation’s No. 41 overall player, No. 4 interior offensive lineman and the top player in Pennsylvania.

He is now the top interior lineman in On3’s rankings. The rest of the On300 updates for the Class of 2023 will be released next week.

Three Penn State signees, quarterback Drew Allar, running back Nick Singleton, and end Dani Dennis-Sutton, finished with five-star ratings from On3 in the Class of 2022. Now, Williams is in line to join them.

Versatility is the name of Williams’ game. He played multiple spots along the offensive line during his junior season at Wyomissing.

“He’s long enough with his arm length that he could certainly play tackle,” former NFL offensive lineman, Go Big Recruiting Founder, and current college and pro football analyst Ross Tucker recently told BWI.

“He’s probably a prototype or ideal NFL guard, with his feet, and power, and athleticism, and also having pretty good length. He has a very high football IQ.”

How Penn State earned this five-star’s commitment

Williams picked Penn State back on Feb. 5. He had claimed 18 offers prior to making his announcement, including top programs like Oklahoma and Michigan.

The junior visited a handful of schools, including Penn State, Virginia Tech, Pitt, and Rutgers, before deciding. Three trips to State College helped the Lions seal the deal, in addition to a strong bond with his future position coach, among other things.

“Coach Traut was a huge factor for me,” Williams told BWI. “He spent a lot of time texting with me and checking up on me. He came into my school multiple times. It’s just a really strong relationship. It’s really been daily for me. I’m always getting a text or a call from someone on the staff. It’s love every single day from them and it’s hard to say no to something like that.”

Williams added that he felt like Penn State was home. He also cited a bond with other members of the program’s fifth-ranked Class of 2023 in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. The group currently includes four future offensive lineman and three Pennsylvania natives.

“Those guys did a great job staying in touch with me, texting me, letting me know that Penn State was the place to be,” Williams said. “It’s kind of cool now that I’m committed and I can call those guys my soon-to-be teammates.”

Scouting Williams’ game

Blue-White Illustrated’s Thomas Frank Carr featured Williams in a recent edition of ‘T-Frank’s Film Room’. The film analyst and host of the BWI YouTube channel can see the current junior as either a guard or tackle at the next level.

“If Penn State is able to land several tackle prospects in the Class of 2023, Williams will fit in nicely at guard,” T-Frank writes. “He shows the necessary power in his lower body to move defensive tackles off of the line of scrimmage, while still having the feet to block in pass protection.

“His highlight-level pull blocking skills also make him a great candidate to fit into Penn State’s power and counter schemes. No matter where he lines up, Jven Williams looks like he’s going to be a major asset for the Penn State offensive line.”
