Penn State is just a few days out from its most important visit weekend. With the early signing period set to open in 15 days, James Franklin and his staff have assembled another strong recruiting class that currently ranks 13th overall in On3’s 2023 Consensus Team Rankings.

With 19 players currently committed, the Nittany Lions have room to add a handful of prospects. Wide receiver, running back and offensive line are all key areas, as is the defensive line. It’s no secret that Penn State sits in a strong position with St. Thomas More defensive end Joseph Mupoyi leading into this weekend’s official visit, and now another edge rusher appears to have emerged in McDonogh prospect Mason Robinson.

A three-star prospect currently, Robinson surprised many back in May when he committed to Northwestern following an official visit. At the time, Penn State was considered a heavy favorite, with Robinson visiting University Park four times in the span of 10 months. Now, it appears as if the Lions are back in the mix, as BWI’s Sean Fitz reported Tuesday morning that Franklin and his staff will host Robinson for an official visit this upcoming weekend.

When you consider Northwestern’s struggles this past season, plus the subsequent decision by head coach Pat Fitzgerald to change his defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, I believe the Nittany Lions are in a strong position to flip Robinson’s commitment. Add in Penn State’s history at McDonogh – Curtis Jacobs, PJ Mustipher, Dani Dennis-Sutton and D’von Ellies all played at the Baltimore prep school – and I’ve decided to log a new Recruiting Prediction Machine pick Tuesday for Robinson to end up signing with the Nittany Lions.

In addition to Penn State, there are other schools showing interest. Virginia Tech, who’s led by former Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry, is also in the mix. As of now, it’s unclear if he’ll visit. We do know that Penn State dropped by McDonogh Tuesday morning and is expected to do an in-home visit with Robinson’s family this evening.

Robinson, who’s now checking in at 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, had a very impressive senior season. He totaled 83 tackles rushing off the edge for McDonogh. He also had 15 tackles for loss and nine sacks.

According to the On3 Consensus, Robinson is the 10th-ranked player in Maryland and No. 616 nationally.
