Penn State continues to search high and low in the transfer portal. Since Monday, the staff has extended at least a half dozen scholarship offers and likely more, as many former players don’t report publicly which schools are pursuing him. However, we did learn of one new player that Penn State has decided to pursue Wednesday in former Iowa defensive back Terry Roberts.

Listed at 5-foot-10, 182 pounds, Roberts is a Pennsylvania native, growing up in Erie, Pa. He actually played with current Penn State offensive lineman Juice Scruggs at Cathedral Prep, winning a state championship in 2017. Roberts went on to play at Iowa the following season, redshirting in 2018.

Roberts made an immediate impact on special teams in 2019 and 2020, totaling 20 tackles his first two years. In 2021, he earned Iowa’s Hustle Award for his contributions on special teams but was forced to miss the second half of the 2021 season due to an injury.

Roberts earned a starting role in 2022. He played in the first three games – totaling 13 tackles and one interception – before an injury once again disrupted his season. Roberts played in just one more game the rest of the season.

According to Pro Football Focus, he did grade out well, totaling an overall defensive grade of 79.0. Roberts played a total of 205 snaps in 2022.

If you include all of his work on special teams throughout his four seasons at Iowa, Roberts totaled 47 career tackles. He also had seven pass deflections and two interceptions. Robers was also recognized as one of the team’s leaders.

Since entering the transfer portal on Tuesday, Roberts has earned offers from UMass, Northern Iowa and Delaware, making Penn State his top option currently. He admitted on Twitter that he had spoken with cornerbacks coach Terry Smith.
