Kevin Jennings ready for first start at SMU

2024 Dallas Christian (Tex.) defensive back William Nettles, a former Purdue commitment, committed to SMU, he told On3 on Friday. He’s commitment No. 10 for the Mustangs and the second pledge this week for Rhett Lashlee.

SMU was first to offer the DFW area standout, but couldn’t land him when it came to his decision this summer. Nettles picked the Boilermakers back in the summer over Nebraska and the Mustangs. Now he’s ready to play for his hometown school.

“They made me feel like the decision was always to stay home,” Nettles told On3. “It just became overwhelming to me that this was the right thing. They offered me first and they stayed on me even after I picked Purdue. They believed in me and I love the direction they’re headed.”

SMU pass game coordinator Rickey Hunley kept up the press on Nettles. Hunley added him to a cornerback group that includes Cedar Hill (Tex.) defensive back Alexander Rodgers.

“I’d be the face of SMU and Dallas if I went there. It’s something big,” Nettles said this summer of Hunley’s pitch. “I’ve been in Dallas my whole life so that would be pretty big to team up with them and be the face there, build my brand there and expand on the outside of football part. That would be great.”

On3 rates William Nettles as an 88, making him the No. 60 overall cornerback in the nation and No. 93 overall prospect in Texas. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he’s the No. 88 overall cornerback in the country and No. 139 prospect in Texas.

The NCAA Transfer Portal window opens Dec. 4 and the early signing period begins Dec. 20. SMU is working on a strong finish to the 2024 high school class with eyes for another strong transfer haul as well.
