After waiting 179 picks to see South Carolina finally have their first player selected in this year’s NFL Draft, four picks later at pick 183, the New England Patriots drafted running back Kevin Harris.

The 5-10, 221-pound running back was a force in 2020, leading the SEC in rushing yards. Despite a back injury slowing him down to start 2021 in a talented running back room, Harris rushed for a season-high 182 yards on 31 carries and a touchdown in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

While it may not have been what some on the outside expected, Harris was part of USC running back room that was by committee in 2022. That’s not always easy for players to get used to, especially if they were the workhorse a year prior like Harris was. But that style has become a staple for New England. What will help him out tremendously is the fact he’s exactly what Bill Belichick looks for in a running back: he protects the football. In 358 carries at USC, Harris fumbled just once.

Harris becomes the second Gamecock drafted this weekend joining teammate and Kingsley Enagbare who was selected in the fifth round with the 179th overall pick by the Green Bay Packers.
