Former Tennessee DE Tyler Baron commits to third school since leaving Vols

Former Tennessee Football defensive end Tyler Baron has flipped his commitment for a second time since entering the NCAA Transfer Portal. He announced a commitment to Miami on Tuesday night, after previous commitments to Ole Miss and Louisville since leaving the Vols.

It was reported on April 23 that Baron would be leaving Louisville and reentering the transfer portal. He committed to Ole Miss on December 16 before reopening his recruitment a month later.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Baron, a Knoxville native, is coming off his best season with the Vols, posting a career-high 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks. He had 28 tackles — 16 solo and 12 assisted — over 12 games.

In 46 games at Tennessee, Baron has 101 tackles, 27.0 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks, along with three passes defended and one fumble recovery, which he returned 24 yards for a touchdown in the 59-3 win over UConn in November.

Baron had 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks as a junior in 2022 and 7.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks in 2021.

Wesley Walker lands at Michigan after commitments to Ole Miss, Louisville

Baron isn’t the first Tennessee player to commit to three schools after leaving the Vols. Former Tennessee defensive back Wesley Walker announced his commitment to Michigan on Friday, after also going through Ole Miss and Louisville. 

Walker went through spring practice at Louisville before reentering the portal. He also committed to Ole Miss in December. 

Over the last five seasons, Walker recorded 184 tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, two sacks and one interception in 45 career games. 

He spent the first three seasons of his career at Georgia Tech, where he had 95 tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss in 22 games. He played in 23 games over the last two seasons at Tennessee, recording 89 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and the interception.

The Vols have added eight players from the portal: Notre Dame tight end Holden Staes; Oregon State defensive back Jermod McCoy; Middle Tennessee State defensive back Jakobe Thomas; Tulane wide receiver Chris Brazzell; Alabama tight end Miles Kitselman; Temple defensive back Jalen McMurray; LSU offensive tackle Lance Heard; Stanford defensive lineman Jaxson Moi

Tennessee lost 13 players to the portal, including Baron and Walker: Linebacker Elijah Herring (Memphis); defensive back Brandon Turnage (Ole Miss); offensive lineman Gerald Mincey (Kentucky); defensive back Tamarion McDonald (Louisville); defensive back De’Shawn Rucker (South Florida); offensive lineman Addison Nichols (Arkansas); defensive back Jack Luttrell (Arizona); defensive back Doneiko Slaughter (Arkansas); offensive lineman Maurice Clipper Jr. (Charlotte); defensive back Warren Burrell (Georgia Tech); defensive back Christian Conyer.
