Marcus Harris Talks After Spring Tennessee Visit

Marcus Harris was back on Rocky Top Thursday night as he took in the Tennessee spring scrimmage at Neyland Stadium. The visit was good as the Vols are positioned well heading into summer time official visits.

“I’ll say Tennessee for sure is in my top five,” Harris said. “(It is) a school that’s been pursuing me for a minute, so if they’re real with me, I’m real with them. And I’m real interested in the program.”

He was able to spend a lot of time with coaches earlier in the day and get a feel for their personalities.

“I was able to sit down and have a good talk with Coach Halzle and Coach Pope, and it was really good just to connect with them again,” Harris said. “They really see me playing X, Y, Z, anywhere on the field, just making things happen.”

This visit was different than the last time he was here a couple of months ago, because Tennessee was practicing and he was able to see the coaches in their environment on the grass.

“The thing that’s really different is me just being able to see the practice and see how the receivers play, and see how Coach Pope, all the coaches coach,” Harris said. “That was really big for me, to see how everything happens out here.

“I took away that they really play the freshmen. They really try to get them involved, and Coach even told me that they’re going to probably see the field this year, so, yeah, that’s real good to know.”

He was really impressed with Tennessee freshman, Mike Matthews, and how they use him. When asked if he was able to envision himself in a similar manner one year from now, he said, he thinks he can play no matter where he goes.

“I feel like anywhere I go, if it’s here or anywhere, I feel like I can make a positive change to the team, help the team,” Harris said.

Wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope has been talking to him a lot as he battles Georgia, Texas and others for his services. Harris was impressed with his demeanor.

“I liked how he was on his players,” Harris said. “He’s real consistent. There were some times the players would drop a ball. He’ll get on them, let them know what to do, and I like that. I like a coach that will get on me and make sure I’m just in the head, just positive.”

The same can be said for Tennessee head coach, Josh Heupel.

“He’s just real chill,” Harris said. “I like a coach that can be real with me. And I feel like he’s been real with me every time I’ve come up here, so that’s good, for sure.”

Overall, this trip was a success for both sides.

“It did help them,” Harris said. “I really got to just sit down with the staff again. I talk to them every now and then over the phone, but it’s just good to always come back in and talk to them.”

Harris will officially visit Tennessee in June.
