2023 College Football Playoff: Look at the field of four

When the CFB Playoff committee announced the bracket for the 2023 College Football Playoff on Sunday, four teams made the list. Texas, Michigan, Alabama, and Washington are headed to CFB’s version of the Final Four.

No. 3 Texas Longhorns

Record: 12-1, faces Washington in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on January 1st, 2024. Texas is a 4.5-point favorite. The Longhorns are making their first College Football Playoff appearance. Texas has not been a contender for a spot in the four-team field until 2023, as its previous highest-ever standing in the CFP ranking until this year’s campaign was No. 14 during the 2018 season. 2024 will be the second appearance by the Longhorns in a New Years Six bowl since the inception of the CFP, joining a Sugar Bowl appearance in 2018.

Best win: Defeated No. 4 Alabama, 34-24, in Tuscaloosa in week two.

Leaders: QB Quinn Ewers (248-of-351 passing, 3,161 yards, 21 touchdowns), DL T’Vondre Sweat (42 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks, one TD catch), Adonai Mitchell (813 yards receiving, 10 TDs).

No. 2 Washington Huskies

Record: 13-0, faces Texas in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on January 1st, 2024. Washington is an underdog at +4.5. The Huskies are making their second College Football Playoff appearance.

Best win: Defeated No. 8 Oregon twice in 2023, 36-33 in week six and 34-31 in the Pac-12 Championship on Friday.

Leaders: QB Michael Penix (307-of-466 passing, 4,218 yards, 33 TDs), WR Rome Odunze (1,428 yards receiving, 13 TDs), Ja’Lynn Polk (1,000 yards receiving, eight TDs).

No. 1 Michigan Wolverines

Record: 13-0, faces Alabama in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on January 1st, 2024. Michigan is a 2.5-point favorite, 45.5 over/under. The Wolverines are making their third College Football Playoff appearance.

Best win: Defeated No. 7 Ohio State, 30-24, on November 25th.

Leaders: QB JJ McCarthy (213-of-287 passing, 2,630 yards, 19 TDs), RB Blake Corum (1,028 yards rushing, 24 touchdowns), LB Junior Colson (35 tackles).

No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide

Record: 12-1, faces Michigan in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on January 1st, 2024. Alabama is a 2.5-point underdog. The Crimson Tide are making their seventh College Football Playoff appearance.

Best win: Defeated No. 6 Georgia, 27-24, in the SEC Championship game on Saturday.

Leaders: QB Jalen Milroe (171-of-261 passing, 2,718 yards, 23 TDs, 468 yards rushing, 12 scores), WR Jermaine Burton (35 catches, 777 yards, eight TDs), LB Dallas Turner (50 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks).
