In some respects, preseason polls are worthless - the games will still be played - but they are a persistent anchoring bias for many college football fans, journalists and, thankfully for me, public bettors. Predictions are sticky in the public mind and an alarming number of otherwise bright people are cowed by opinions that are "official."
