Steve Sarkisian was on the weekly SEC Coaches Teleconference for a short time on Wednesday, speaking for six minutes. Here’s what he had to say.

Sarkisian was excited to start the season, and especially to do so at 12 p.m. local time so they don’t have to sit around the hotel all day: “I think at the end of the day, this is going to serve as a great barometer for us of where we’re at, the things we’re good at, the things we need to improve upon. Naturally, we’re going up there to try to win the ball game, but I also think that this one game won’t define our season. We’ve got a lot more games to go play, not only non-conference but in-conference play with some hopes of postseason aspirations.”

When asked by On3’s Pete Nakos if Emmett Mosley V would be available Saturday in Columbus, Sarkisian stuck with the same “he’s limited this week” that he provided on Monday.

What’s Sark curious about this weekend? “Everything. It’s a new team, new people doing new things with new roles and new responsibilities. Everybody has had to elevate their game from the last year to the next whether it’s a third year player, a senior player, a second year player, a third year player, a special teams guys playing more on offense or defense, kids who were in high school now playing for us in college, I’m curious about it all. It’s going to be fun to get answers to a lot of things we have questions about which, quite frankly, is just about everything.”

What does it take for a young wide receiver to play early considering he’s had freshmen wideouts do just that in years past? “They have to earn trust. At the end of the day, it’s not about ability, it’s what you’re able to do. What you’re able to do is what ultimately you show us. If you can do it consistently, that earns our trust. If you earn our trust, we’re going to play you.”

Steve Sarkisian on Week 1 and playing the same opponent in back to back games: “Lot of similar names from last year, but how much have they evolved and how much have we evolved with some of the people in our organization and some of the schemes? That’s part of the process of a game one and that’s always one of the challenges of game one, the unknowns and then trying to put your players in the best position to have success.”

On playing in Columbus: “I’m going to take it all in. Like I said, last year was my first time going to the big house. Historically for me, traditionally, when I get to a stadium, I do a lap around the field and try to take it in. I try to take in the fanfare and I’ll do the same. I’ve got a ton of respect for Ohio State for decades, going way back to those great teams and those great players they had. So I’m excited for our players, I’m excited for our staff, and us that we get to experience this. I’ll take it in, then when it’s time to kick it off we’ll be dialed in and focused on the task at hand.”
