Quick Thoughts: Michigan fires Sherrone Moore three weeks before Texas takes on the Wolverines
Wednesday got interesting. Michigan is firing Sherrone Moore after two seasons and just three weeks before the Wolverines are set to take on Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
To make this move a few days after Moore was made available to the media for a Citrus Bowl preview and for local press in Ann Arbor is a shock, but the reason is out there. Michigan announced the firing is for cause due to “credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”

Biff Poggi is slated to be the interim.
Inside Texas left a message for the Citrus Bowl asking if the news had any effect on the upcoming matchup on December 31. Until then…
Scattershot thoughts
- Well, this definitely changes the game, doesn’t it? Should it take place in Orlando, the Longhorns could either be dealing with a shell-shocked program or with one galvanized in an us-against-the-world mentality. No matter the case, the Wolverines will be without their head coach and play-caller. Poggi has plenty of gameday experience as a head coach, including in a previous temporary interim role at Michigan, so there will be a vacuum but one that can be practically filled for one game while Michigan conducts a search.
- Time to look at the roster, right? Here are the Texans on the Wolverines…
- WR Andrew Marsh
- DL Enow Etta
- CB Jayden Sanders
- DB Max Reyes
- OL Blake Frazier
- OL Ty Haywood
- DL Ike Iwunnah
- There aren’t a ton of players on the roster aside from those Texans where Texas and Michigan waged crossover recruiting battles. But in the 2026 class? OL Malakai Lee is the big name. Texas recruited Lee hard but not as hard as Michigan. Now, the Wolverines’ O-line focused head coach is out of the picture. Some other players in the 2026 class of note include Jamarion Vincent, Alister Vallejo, and Jaylen Pile.
- This also has a significant impact on the 2027 matchup with the Wolverines. Which is a lot further down the road than 21 days. Who will Michigan hire? Who is even available?
- Paul had an article up recently about potential opt outs for the Citrus Bowl with six players listed. Well, it’s not hard to envision that list growing.
Obviously, there’s more to this to come, but those are good things to consider as Moore’s dismissal likely launches another coaching carousel chain reaction that Texas’ football program stands to benefit from.
