Both agree that Texas has the depth of talent that is becoming comparable to some of the good Mack Brown-coached teams.
“I like the depth, the quality of our starters, but we can see the quality from the backups, the twos, the threes,” Erwin said. “We’re finally at a championship-caliber team from a depth standpoint. You know the first thing I’ve thought of is just you listen to Colorado and Deion Sanders talking about ‘we coming.’ I think we here, I really do.
“It’s coach Steve Sarkisian’s team now. They look like they’re supposed to look and obviously the culture is fantastic.”
Erwin said there is a loyalty and trust from the players toward coach Sarkisian that’s developed from the coach “staying true to his guys.”
“That’s intrinsic and it’s inherent that you got to have the players,” Erwin said. “You don’t always have to like or love the coach, but there’s a loyalty there and there’s a trust there. And I think that trust goes back to a couple years ago when (Texas) went through that 5-7 season when it was so difficult. Sark stayed true to his guys and I think that’s paying off for him.
“He’s got guys that from a talent standpoint, a size standpoint, he knows we’ve got to have to go into the SEC. He knows what it should look like. And I think we’ve got it.”
Burton talked about the fact that players like Jordan Whittington, Jaylan Ford, and T’Vondre Sweat and the fact that they wouldn’t have come back for this year unless the culture was pristine.

“This team reminds me — from a depth of talent perspective – to some of the Mack Brown teams,” Burton said. “Perhaps that’s because of the consecutive recruiting classes and what they’ve done in the portal.”
Erwin said the quarterback room is as good as he’s seen it and was uber-impressed by the play of backup quarterback Maalik Murphy.
“Quinn is going to be better than he was last year – he’s obviously the starter at this point,” Erwin said. “But I’m telling you Maalik is nipping at his heels. Quinn is not gonna be able to relax one day from the moment that Spring game ended. He’s got to be on his toes. It’s going to be studying the game, he’s got to eat right and stay in the shape. Malik thoroughly impressed me.”
Burton lauds the depth at Texas and asks can they take a hit to any position and still keep going at a possible Big 12 championship level?
“Yes, I think so,” Erwin said. “On offense only one that I’m a little bit concerned about would be the tight end room. I don’t think we have quite the depth at that position that that coaches would like to have. It’s still good, but we really can’t afford to take a ding there and still be a 12-personnel team like Sark wants to be.”
