It’s power rankings season as we enter May. In this edition of On Texas Football, our Justin Wells and Joe Cook dive into position rankings at a number of spots, plus Texas’ No. 10 standing in ESPN’s recent power ranking top 25 and how it’ll affect expectations for the 2023 season.

In this episode, Justin and Joe discuss:

  1. Justin and Joe begin with Texas’ quarterback room and how it measures up. On3 recently ranked the UT quarterback room as the No. 3 group in the nation behind USC (No. 1) and LSU (No. 2). With the incumbent Quinn Ewers, backup Maalik Murphy, and diaper dandy freshman Arch Manning, it’s easily one of the most talented units in the country with the highest ceiling. They wonder what puts Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier ahead of the Horns, and praise Caleb Williams with the Trojans.
  2. Justin and Joe shift to the wide receiver room for a pleasant surprise where the unit debuts at No. 2 in On3’s rankings. With the return of Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington, plus the additions of former Georgia Bulldog AD Mitchell and elite early enrollee freshmen Johntay Cook and Deandre Moore, Texas only trails the Buckeyes of Ohio State.
  3. Justin and Joe discuss the ESPN Team Power Rankings with Texas checking in at No. 10. It’s a jump from No. 16 in the most recent addition, despite losing stars Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson. .
