In this episode, Bobby and Joe discuss:
- Joe offered his initial thoughts on the schedule and notes his belief in the balance of it. “I think everything the conference tried to do in being fair, they were probably able to do that. You don’t have to travel to Provo. Your ‘new team’ matchup is with Houston, who you’re very, very familiar with. The only thing is, just look at that home slate. There’s not a whole lot going on there in the home slate.” Texas will host Rice, Wyoming, Kansas, BYU, Kansas State, and Texas Tech at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium.
- The two discuss where they see the more challenging stretch of games for the Longhorns. Bobby says the last three games of going to TCU and Iowa State before hosting Texas Tech. “It’s a back-ended schedule, in my opinion. That’s a fair comment.” Joe suggests it’s Kansas State, at TCU, and at Iowa State.
- Bobby observes that every Texas-based team has to play one another in a callback to the days of the Southwest Conference. The Longhorns don’t get Oklahoma State or West Virginia, who could be at the bottom of the Big 12 next year. Bobby then notes one of the more interesting parts of the Big 12 schedule “Kansas State plays Texas teams five weeks in a row. It’s a weird anomaly.“
- “I don’t think it’s a bad schedule,” Burton said. “I think that it’s interesting that Texas gets Baylor early and on the road. Same as last year, they were at Texas Tech on the road. It’s going to be an early conference game on the road that Texas absolutely has to be ready for.”
- Which non-conference games stand out? Both look at Week 2. Baylor hosts Utah, UCF travels to Boise State, Cincinnati travels to Pitt, Iowa State plays Iowa, Kansas plays Illinois, Oklahoma hosts SMU, Oklahoma State goes to Arizona State, Texas Tech hosts Oregon, and Texas visits Alabama.
