When Quinn Ewers was named the starter over Tua Tagovailoa for the Miami Dolphins earlier this week, it gave the former Longhorns star the opportunity for his first extended regular season action in the NFL. During his start against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, there were some ups but there were more downs for Ewers and the Dolphins.

Cincinnati defeated Miami 45-21. A fellow quarterback who transferred out of Ohio State, Joe Burrow, was 25-for-32 for 309 yards and four touchdowns.

Ewers finished the game 20-for-30 for 260 yards with two interceptions. His favorite target was Jaylen Waddle, who hauled in five catches for 72 yards. He also completed passes to Greg Dulcich, Darren Waller, and Theo Wease Jr.

Ewers started 10-for-12 and had several highlight throws.

One of his interceptions was an unfortunate deflection. Ewers’ pass over the middle intended for Wease was deflected and intercepted by Barrett Carter. The other was on a deep pass intended for Waddle and intercepted by Jalen Davis.

Unfortunately for Ewers and Texas, it continues a streak of first NFL starts ending in losses for former Longhorn signal callers.

With Tagovailoa’s future up in the air in Miami, it is likely that Ewers will be the Dolphins’ starter for the remainder of the season Miami head coach Mike McDaniel saw plenty of encouraging things from Ewers.

“But as I take a step back, I feel like there was some positive stuff going on with him and it being his first start,” McDaniel said. “It wasn’t too big for him. He had us operating. I think we had no penalties in the first half. Ultimately it was 17-14 out of the first half. Then the second half is tough to evaluate. Specifically, I think there were a couple third downs I was hoping he could make. But I think it’s a good starting point for him specifically.”
