Recruiting Scoop: 5-Star Updates & Decision Day for Samari Matthews

Big moves on the trail as top 5-star targets inch closer to decisions. All eyes are on Samari Matthews with his commitment set for today.

Justin and Joe preview the decision for 4-star cornerback Samari Matthews. Matthews and Texas became a possibility once Mark Orphey joined the Longhorn program. Orphey had built a relationship with Matthews when he was at Rutgers, and an offer from the Longhorns immediately netted several scheduled visits. Texas remains the team to beat, but South Carolina has not let up.

The two then look toward Saturday’s announcement from 5-star TE Kaiden Prothro. Texas has worked hard to make Georgia work hard for a top-50 prospect in its backyard, even lobbing a substantial NIL offer Prothro’s way. Signs point, however, to a red and black end to this recruitment.

The show closes with a look at highly-touted RB Derrek Cooper. Cooper is scheduled to announce on July 20 and recently released his top five with the Longhorns making the cut. Chad Scott hasn’t seen Cooper on an official visit to Austin quite yet, but there are signs that the Longhorns may be able to eek in front despite the lack of an OV.
