Few humans on this Earth dedicated their lives to anything like Scott Wilson dedicated his time to Texas Longhorns athletics. From basketball and volleyball, to holding untouchable streaks for attending football and baseball games, Wilson will be dearly missed by his fellow fans after his passing earlier this week. For as great a fan he as was, Wilson was an even greater human.

The streaks are nice to talk about when discussing Wilson, but his faith was something that always stood out. He hosted a yearly “Wilson’s Annual Baseball Get-Together,” where fans could gather and discuss anything from Texas Baseball to fellowship. If you got to know Mr. Wilson, you gained an excellent friend that instant.

It would already be an amazing accomplishment as a fan to see every home game since 2000. But Wilson’s streak stretched well past that and beyond the confines of Austin. His football streak started in October of 1977 and continued on for 594 games straight games, home, road, or neutral. That means Wilson watched at least 35,460 minutes of Texas football during his streak. That’s just over 74 days of his life in the stands cheering on teams led by Darrell Royal, Fred Akers, David McWilliams, John Mackovic, Mack Brown, Charlie Strong, Tom Herman, and Steve Sarkisian.

His baseball streak began a few years later, but the sheer dedication to see teams led by Augie Garrido, David Pierce, and now Jim Schlossnagle was incredible. Wilson went to 1566 straight baseball games. His dedication will be unmatched until Gabriel blows his horn for all of us. Wilson was the Cal Ripken of fans for any sport.

“When you think about what makes Texas baseball so special, it always comes back to the people — and Scott Wilson is one of those people who truly embodied everything this program stands for,” Schlossnagle said in a statement. “Scott’s been there through it all — from Opening Days to national championship runs — always wearing his burnt orange, always supporting our players and coaches with the same energy and love for the game. You could always count on seeing him in the stands, cheering, smiling, and leading the Eyes of Texas. Scott Wilson will always be remembered for his unwavering loyalty and support, as a member of our Texas baseball family.”

When you visit that many games in a row, it’s hard to not pick up a few things along the way. Wilson’s house was a literal museum of Texas Longhorns history. Walking inside was truly something that would make your jaw drop to the floor. From a fish tank filled with ticket stubs for proof of attendance, to a hallway filled with hats, you knew a true fan of all things burnt orange lived in his home.

Rest in peace, Mr. Wilson. You were truly a great fan, but an even better person.

We will miss you dearly.
