“Texas had a somewhat, I would say, good season a year ago – it was more tantalizing than anything,” Burton said. “People could kind of see things start to move in the right direction. People are looking forward to this football season as much or more, I think, than they have any Texas football season in quite a while.”
The duo listed three issues each for Texas to address in camp, which begins on Aug. 2.
Nahlin, the publisher of InsideTexas.com, said he’s keeping an eye on the interior offensive line and its growth, the need for a step up in third-down defense – via a better pass rush and better play in the secondary, and the edges of the defensive line opposite of Barryn Sorrell.
“Texas is going to have the best set of bookends in the offensive line, not a whole lot of question going in there. They even improved throughout the spring,” Nahlin said about the OL. “The interior is going to be interesting. You want to hear about the OL winning their battles versus the defensive line or at least holding their own more. We don’t expect them to get a ton of push against those guys.”
Burton listed the need for Quinn Ewers continued improvement at quarterback, the Longhorns’ linebacker rotation outside of Jaylan Ford, and finding a second safety.

“You would like to see better decision making, not turning the ball over from Ewers,” Burton said about the Texas quarterback. “We want to see all of those incremental improvements with Quinn. Part of that will be pass protection and the ability to actually have some time back there, as well.
“You add those two things together, and all of a sudden, I think you see better you see better production from the wide receivers. But if you can see some categorical, efficiency rating somewhere close by the end of camp, all of a sudden you get really, really happy, right? And that all starts in fall camp with those guys kind of leaning on each other and knowing, you know, the Rive game now is five weeks away, essentially.”
As far as the edge position, Nahlin said the key is about Texas developing the talent it already has – and it’s considerable. The battle for a second safety will center around the health of transfer Jalen Catalon, who has a history of injuries that forced him to miss loads of time at Arkansas.
