After Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian‘s name was mentioned in a report by The Athletic on Saturday morning that said his representatives have informed NFL decision makers he would be interested in potential head coaching openings, Sarkisian was asked about the story following Texas’ win over Mississippi State.

“I’d love to touch on this, so bear with me for a second because it really pisses me off that one person can make a report that in turn the entire media sports world runs with as factual,” Sarkisian said. “To the point where my agency and my agents have to put out a statement that they have never done. Historically, CAA, Jimmy Sexton, and Ed Marynowitz never do that. But I had to do that to protect my locker room and my team.

“I thought it was absolutely ridiculous. I thought it was completely unprofessional of that person to put that report out, and the fact that everyone ran with it is borderline embarrassing for the media. I respect what you guys do, I really do, and everybody else. But the fact that everybody ran that as truth is really embarrassing.

“I’ve got a small circle when I make decisions on what I do and what I don’t do. Nobody would speak on my behalf without me knowing. So where that report came from, I’d love to talk to that person. Because it’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Sarkisian’s representatives at CAA, Sexton and Marynowitz, released a statement on Saturday that vehemently denied the report.

“Any reports regarding communications on coaching opportunities with NFL teams are patently false and wildly inaccurate,” the statement said. “Sark is solely focused on coaching the University of Texas football team.”

Sarkisian, who in his fifth year as head coach of the Longhorns, currently has a record of 44-19. He has helped the Longhorns reach back-to-back College Football Playoff semifinals, won the 2023 Big 12 Championship during Texas’ final year as members of the league, and has sent over 20 players to the NFL draft in the past two offseasons.
