Steve Sarkisian provides small updates on injured players on the SEC Coaches Teleconference

Steve Sarkisian is as private as he can be with injuries. Without having to put an official designation on the SEC Student-Athlete Availability Report considering the Longhorns’ next game against a non-conference opponent, Sarkisian can reveal as much or as little as he wants about a player’s status.

When asked if he expects to have Quintrevion Wisner, Alex January, and DeAndre Moore on Saturday, Sarkisian kept most of the details to himself.
Eric Nahlin published more detailed notes on the injury status of several Longhorns on Tuesaday night.
On Monday, Sarkisian labeled Cole Hutson, Kobe Black, and Xavier Filsaime as questionable. Sarkisian also said CJ Baxter would miss the Sam Houston game. Sarkisian mentioned Wednesday that Texas played Mason Shipley as the kickoff specialist in place of Will Stone after Stone complained of back tightness pregame.
In the last question of his Monday press conference, Sarkisian once again said Emmett Mosley was “close.”
“We’ll see what we look like health wise by Saturday, but we’re going to try to prep all our guys to be ready to go come Saturday night at 7 o’clock,” Sarkisian said Monday.
Other updates from Sark on the SEC Coaches Teleconference
Steve Sarkisian is asked a question about how head coaches manage handling external expectations within the building: “I don’t think there are more opinions than there were before, they’re just now being heard because of all the different platforms they can be heard.” — “I think it’s just important to make sure that we’re messaging things the right way within our own building, our own coordinators, inside our own position meeting rooms of what our expectations are. One of the key expectations is consistent growth.”

Sarkisian on the run game, says he feels they ran well week one, week two created passing explosives but were “too choppy” in the run game. Sarkisian says against UTEP, he saw opportunities for more yards for the three younger backs: “I think there are great learning lessons from the last two games for our runners to learn from and where we can grow. But the run game takes all 11.”
Does Steve Sarkisian have a “timer” he wants his QBs to get the ball out by? Sark: “If we’re getting 5, 6, 7 seconds, we’ve got one hell of an offensive line.”
Says the average timer is “2.5 seconds, sometimes 3.” Says that if that’s the timeframe, that’s a good pocket and there are ample opportunities to see the field and make throws down the field.
Sarkisian says that his kickoff coverage unit, “they wish more people would run them back out. These guys are running down there as fast as they can, and they’re taking on blockers and things. As of right now, a lot of people are shutting their returns down. I think that’s a little bit of credit to last year’s coverage unit.”
