Texas' Arch Manning garners Maxwell Award Player of the Week, Associated Press, Davey O’Brien and Manning awards

Texas sophomore quarterback Arch Manning garnered Maxwell Award Player of the Week, Associated Press, Davey O’Brien and the Manning Award after his fantastic performance over Arkansas.

In addition to garnering the Maxwell Award’s Player of the Week, Manning was also selected as the Associated Press’ National Player of the Week on Nov. 24. Additionally, Manning was named to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8 list and was tabbed a Manning Award “Star of the Week” following his performance in Texas’ 52-37 win over Arkansas on Nov. 22.

Manning became just the second quarterback in UT history to record a passing touchdown, rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown in the same game, as he matched his career high with four touchdown passes for a career-high total of six scores to go with a career-high 389 passing yards in a 52-37 win over Arkansas. The only other Longhorn to ever record those three types of touchdowns in the same game was the legendary Bobby Layne in 1946 against Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. It also made Manning the second SEC player this century with multiple passing touchdowns, a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown in a game with the other being South Carolina’s Connor Shaw in the 2013 Capital One Bowl, and the first FBS player with that since Florida State’s Jordan Travis in 2022. Manning is also the first FBS player with 300 pass yards, three pass touchdowns, one rush touchdown and one receiving touchdown in a game since Texas State’s Tyler Jones in 2016. The only other power conference players to do that this century are Shaw, Kansas State’s Josh Cribbs (2003, 2004), Northwestern’s Mike Kafka (2009) and Shaw. Manning is just the fourth FBS player this century with at least four pass touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown in a single game. The others were Jones, Ohio State’s Terrelle Pryor (2010), and North Illinois’ Jordan Lynch (2013). Manning is the second Texas quarterback since the beginning of the Big 12 era (1996) with three games of 300 pass yards and three pass touchdowns against conference opponents (Casey Thompson, 2021). The only other SEC quarterback to match that this season is Tennessee’s Joey Aguilar. Manning set another career high with seven-straight completions to start a game as he led the Longhorns on touchdown drives on their first three possessions. He also guided the offense to a field goal to end the first half and then began the second half in the same fashion as the first with three-straight touchdown drives. That provided Texas a 45-23 lead near the end of the third quarter. For the game, Manning averaged 21.6 yards per completion on his 18 connections with only four of those going for under 10 yards. Eight of those went for 20-plus yards with three for 45-plus. His four touchdown passes (46, 54, 8, 20) averaged 32 yards per reception. The first receiving touchdown of his career came late in the first quarter on a reverse pass from WR Parker Livingstone, which provided Texas with a 14-6 lead, while his three-yard rushing touchdown capped a 75-yard drive to start the second half for a 31-20 advantage. For the season, Manning has completed 213-of-341 attempts (62.5%) for 2,763 yards (21st FBS) 23 touchdowns (17th FBS) with just seven interceptions, while rushing for 191 yards and a team-leading seven touchdowns. His 16.9 points responsible for per game are second in the SEC and eighth nationally, while his 186 total points responsible for are also second in the SEC and ninth nationally.
