With just under three months to go until the first tip against Duke in Charlotte, NC, Texas basketball’s season is approaching faster than you might think.

Texas fans had already learned the Longhorns’ out-of-conference schedule and the home-and-away schedule for the SEC, but the SEC had yet to announce the specific dates of each game. That changed today when the conference announced its full schedule of games, with the Longhorns beginning conference play on January 3 at home against Mississippi State.

While many students will be focused on football season and winter break, Texas does have the privilege of an opening home game before running into a gauntlet of games. Texas will first play a midweek game at Tennessee in a matchup against former coach Rick Barnes before heading to Tuscaloosa for a Saturday matchup against the Crimson Tide. These two teams are likely to finish in the top five of the SEC standings.

Texas will then return home for a midweek game against Vanderbilt before the first major home game of the season, hosting the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday, January 17. It will mark the first matchup of a new era for both schools, with Texas head coach Sean Miller entering his first year at the same time as Bucky McMillan in College Station.

A few days later, the Longhorns start a tough road-based stretch, heading to Lexington, Auburn, and Norman in three of their next four games—matchups in which the Longhorns will likely not be favored. Texas will also host Georgia during that span in the first part of a home-and-home between the two teams.

Following the Oklahoma game on the last day of January, Texas is given a fairly manageable stretch: versus South Carolina, versus Ole Miss, at Missouri, versus LSU, and at Georgia. While the Longhorns could easily take four games from that run, which spans the first three weeks of February, it sets them up for arguably their toughest game of the year.

Texas will host Florida on Wednesday, February 25, in what could be one of the most electric environments of the early Miller era, depending on the Longhorns’ performance and just how good Florida may be.

The Longhorns finish the regular season with a trio of rivalry games, traveling to College Station and Fayetteville before ending the year in a classic, hosting the Sooners in Austin in early March.

The Longhorns have multiple challenging OOC games and will face a gauntlet in the SEC, but overall it’s a very manageable schedule for Miller in year one. Texas’ trio of home-and-homes—Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Georgia—features none of the top six or so schools in the conference, and they’ll host most of the games they should win. In an era where 7–11 or 8–10 can get you to the NCAA tournament in the SEC, hosting the likes of Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and LSU becomes very important.
