The No. 8 Texas Longhorns entered the bye week not fully in control of its own destiny as it pertains to making the Big 12 Championship. Even in the early stages of conference play, Texas needed a loss from West Virginia to regain full autonomy with regards to Arlington.

Houston, the Longhorns upcoming opponent, provided that to the Horns on Thursday thanks to a last-second Hail Mary. While the Longhorns aren’t in second place quite yet due to Iowa State having won one more conference game than the Horns, Texas will have their own opportunity versus the Cyclones later in the year.

Four of Texas’ final six games are against teams currently .500 or worse in league play. The path to Arlington is once again clear, with no additional obstacles in the way outside of those six opponents.

Here’s how things went in the Big 12 this past weekend.

West Virginia at Houston

Houston 41, West Virginia 39

The most important result of the weekend for the Longhorns put Steve Sarkisian’s program back in control of its own destiny, and likely indicated the Mountaineers are due for another loss. A 42-point fourth quarter ended with Donovan Smith finding Stephon Johnson in the end zone. Twenty-eight points were scored in the final 10 minutes, including 13 in the last 12 seconds.

Iowa State at Cincinnati

Iowa State 30, Cincinnati 10

The moribund Bearcat offense could not figure out Jon Heacock’s defense and the Cyclones zoomed into second place in the league with a 3-1 record.

BYU at TCU

TCU 44, BYU 11

Josh Hoover, stepping in for Chandler Morris, was 37-for-58 for 439 yards with four scores and two interceptions as the Horned Frogs jumped all over the Cougars in Fort Worth. Former Longhorn Jared Wiley caught one of those four touchdowns. BYU could not eclipse 250 yards of total offense.

Kansas at Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State 39, Kansas 32

Oklahoma State took care of business despite allowing Jason Bean to pass for 410 yards and five touchdowns. The KU running game managed only 90 yards, while a balanced Cowboy attack saw Ollie Gordon go for 100+ in both rushing and receiving yardage.

Kansas State at Texas Tech

Kansas State 38, Texas Tech 21

On3 True Freshman of the Week Avery Johnson scored five rushing touchdown and was 8-for-9 passing in the Wildcats’ statement win in Lubbock. Jake Strong threw three interceptions for the Red Raiders in relief of Behren Morton.
