Texas HS Football players, former Longhorn, and more head to Austin for San Jose State on Saturday

For the San Jose State Spartans, there are a number of Texas HS football athletes returning to the Lone Star State for their battle vs No. 7 Texas from Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday, plus a familiar face.

Larry Turner-Gooden, S

The Texas-Ex played sparingly during his time on the Forty Acres. 2024 was his first season at SJSU where he finished the season with nine tackles and one forced fumble, including a season-high three tackles at Oregon State (11/9).

Leland Smith, WR, Houston (Texas) Strake Jesuit

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound junior is playing in his first season at SJSU after transferring from Purdue in January.

He appeared in all 12 games in 2024, finishing with six receptions for 72 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a 15-yard receiving touchdown vs. Nebraska (9/28).

David Tuihalangingie, LB, Humble (Texas) Atascocita

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound transfer from Trinity Valley CC (Athens, TX) played in 13 games last fall for the Spartans, recording two tackles.

Craig Stutzmann, offensive coordinator/pass game coordinator

While not from Texas, he worked with GJ Kinne at Texas State for two years as the wide receiver coach/pass game coordinator.

Mike Judge, Tight End coach/run game coordinator

Nothing from Texas, except the same name from Austin’s own Mike Judge, creator of King of the Hill and many popular movies and television series. We have not confirmed if there’s any relation, for the record.

Sam Mayday, Quality Control

For those from the 80s, you’ll recognize that name as a bartender in Boston who used to pitch for the Red Sox.
