Texas is left out of the 2025 College Football Playoff

After a 9-3 season in 2025 where the Texas Longhorns saw many highs and lows, the College Football Playoff Committee has not selected Texas as one of its 12 teams to compete for a national championship.

Texas was ranked 13th overall, four places away from an at-large bid, in the last iteration of rankings on Tuesday, December 2.

Even with losses to BYU and Alabama in the conference championship games last night, it was not enough for Texas to overtake the Crimson Tide or Miami, who took the final at-large bids.

Texas ended outside of one of the first two teams out, likely ranking as a top-13 team in the nation, but that just wasn’t quite enough, as the 11 and 12 seeds were awarded to conference champions.

The Longhorns ended the year with the second-hardest strength of schedule among contending teams, only behind Alabama, with one of the 11 best strength of records. Texas also held head to head over selected teams, Texas A&M and Oklahoma, as well as Vanderbilt.

Despite this, Texas will not be heading to the Playoff, with its three regular-season losses, one of which was to 4-8 Florida, and overall inconsistent play aiding other two-loss teams ahead of them.

The Longhorns will know their eventual bowl game today.
