Texas lands Notre Dame transfer catcher Carson Tinney

Texas is moving on the services of the Buster Posey Award finalist Rylan Galvan, who had a fantastic spring behind the plate and is most likely headed to the MLB draft. The Longhorns will be welcoming the only Buster Posey Award finalist from 2025 who will remain in college baseball. Notre Dame transfer catcher Carson Tinney has committed to Texas.

Ranked No. 32 in the portal, he was the highest ranked catcher available. Tinney is an elite defender with serious power in his bat. This could end up as an upgrade at a position many considered elite for Texas in 2025.
Tinney immediately becomes one of if not the biggest power bats Texas has going into 2026, the dude is unreal when he launches HRs. Tinney also really hit his stride with 15 of his 17 long balls coming in the later two-thirds of his sophomore season. He sits No. 10 among Division I hitters in OPS at 1.251. That’s paired with a .348 batting average.
With Tinney, Texas is shaping up to be a dangerous team at the plate.
When comparing his season to Galvan’s, there are a lot of similarities in the numbers with the scales tipping in Tinney’s favor given he played in fewer games. If he can improve on these numbers we will be in for a real show at the Disch.

It isn’t just the offense that draws attention to Tinney. He is an elite defensive catcher with a cannon for an arm. Watching him throw down is a thing of beauty. Paired with Max Weiner emphasizing the need for a fast time to home plate from the mound for the pitchers, Tinney will look to allow few true stolen bases in 2026.
There is good reason he is a finalist for the Buster Posey Award.
When comparing Tinney to Galvan defensively, they both posses elite numbers but again the edge goes to Tinney again with 9% more runners thrown out. Both allow few stolen bases and are virtually moving walls behind the plate.

Tinney was one of the biggest portal needs for the Longhorns. Jim Schlossnagle recently told HornSports.com that “there has never been a good baseball team without a good catcher”
Well Texas can be a good team again in 2026 with the addition of Tinney.
