The Texas Longhorns are in need of a shortstop with Jalin Flores likely headed for the draft. After heavily pursuing Virginia’s Eric Becker in the portal, Jim Schlossnagle has turned to Stanford’s Temo Becerra to fill the position. In 2025 he slashed .330/.384/.427 with a total of 14 extra base hits. Defensively he had a .935 fielding percentage.

Texas did everything they could to land Becker but sometimes things aren’t meant to be as Becker has reportedly elected to stay in Charlottesville with the ‘Hoos.

If Becerra’s name sounds familiar, he was 3-for-8 with two doubles, a RBI, a walk, two sacrifices, and two runs scored in the 2023 Stanford Super Regional.

Offensively, Becerra will not be someone to expect big power numbers from considering he has three career homers and 23 doubles in three seasons. What he will do is hit for average and be a thorn in the side of a pitcher. His walk to strikeout ratio is a bit lacking at about 1:2 and he is not a guy that has really been a threat on the basepaths. In his career, he’s 7-for-11

Defensively Becerra has a very good arm but is probably a touch below what Texas had in Flores. His Range Factor, which credits players for fielded balls per innings played, isn’t far off from Flores’ SEC best 4.37. Becerra would’ve been good for 6th in the SEC at 3.62. Basically it tells us he fields more balls per inning than others, which can be assumed he can cover more of the field.

The dream scenario here is that Becerra linking up with Troy Tulowitzki will access some untapped potential at the plate and in the field with one-year rental at shortstop.
