Who is Texas rooting for on Conference Championship Saturday?

by: RT Young3 hours ago

It’s not the Conference Championship Saturday Texas was hoping for, but it’s the card they’ve been dealt. So, who are the Longhorns rooting for today with the Big 12, SEC and B10 conference championships on the line? Can any outcome shakeup the playoff snowglobe to such a degree that the Longhorns find their way into the playoff field?

Luckily the Longhorns still made their mark on today, making rooting for certain teams more of a fielder’s choice. The fact Texas knocked the Texas A&M Aggies out of contention for the SEC crown will make watching the game in Atlanta easier, certainly. And though the College Football Playoffs looks all but dead for Steve Sarkisian’s team, they still have to root for a miracle.

Let’s look at what that would be.

Big 12 Championship: #11 BYU vs #4 Texas Tech

Spread: Red Raiders – 12.5

Best outcome for Texas: Tech obliterates BYU for the second time. It’s hard to beat a team twice, says the old adage. If the Red Raiders blowout the Cougars for the second time? What will the case for BYU be? They will have had two games against playoff caliber teams and been smoked in each.

SEC Championship: #3 Georgia vs #9 Alabama

Spread: Dawgs -1.5

Best outcome for Texas: The Bulldogs chomp the Tide into pieces. The fact that Alabama beat Georgia once probably makes wishing for this a fool’s errand. But Alabama does have what the “bright minds” on the CFP committee are calling the second worst loss after their Week 1 defeat to a bad Florida State team and were beaten at home by Oklahoma. If getting annihilated by Georgia could do something to hurt the Tide’s goodwill in the eyes of the committee, it’s worth a shot. This is the time I remind you Kirby Smart is 1-7 versus Alabama, btw!

B10 Championship: #2 Indiana vs #1 Ohio State

Spread: Buckeyes -4

Best outcome for Texas: Ohio State wins by two or more scores and the outcome is never in doubt. The committee needs late night doubt about whether or not anyone can beat the Buckeyes in the entire field. And hopefully if that’s in question, they’ll look to the only team who has played them close all season.

ACC Championship: Duke at #17 UVA

Spread: Cavaliers – 4

Best outcome for Texas: Texas should be hoping for a Duke win. That outcome will send two G5 teams (James Madison and Tulane, both with lame duck head coaches) to the CFP. There’s a lot of wishcasting involved here, but if Duke wins and the ACC has a 8-5 conference champion, shouldn’t that cast doubt on the entire ACC? Including Miami and Notre Dame.

Texas needs chaos that creates late night consternation on the committee and maybe a little ear twisting from the committee by ESPN once they see this apocalyptic scenario. Will it work? Probably not. But it’s their last chance.
