Sources tell IT he enjoyed his time in Austin and built strong relationships for life. He was able to compete with some of the best quarterbacks in the country, the source said.
Owens competed with guys like Manning, Quinn Ewers, KJ Lacey, and Matthew Caldwell. And there’s a belief that Manning with return in 2026. Those two are close friends. Whenever Manning left the field after a bad drive or mistake, Owens was often the first teammate to meet him on the sidelines.
Overall, it was the best decision for his family and himself, sources said. “He’s ready for a fresh opportunity.”

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound prospect from Houston (Texas) Cy-Fair, played in three games in 2024 as a backup to Ewers and Manning. He was 2-for-4 passing for 19 yards, plus three yards on one carry.
Owens breakout performance was in the 2024 Texas Spring game. He went 14-for-21, 228 yards, and three touchdowns, topping Manning’s White squad, 35-34.
Owens was also part of the No. 1-ranked position room in CFB for 2025, according to Athlon Sports.
“Arch Manning is getting plenty of buzz this year, but he’s not the only former highly touted recruit in Texas’ quarterback room. The Longhorns also have redshirt freshman Trey Owens and true freshman K.J. Lacey in tow – both of whom were four-stars out of high school – and come in as Athlon Sports’ No. 1 QB unit in 2025.”
Sources indicate Owens already has interest and opportunities from a number of programs for his next spot. With the window opening on January 2nd, he hopes to have a decision soon after that time.
Texas just completed a 9-3 regular season with losses to Ohio State, Florida, and Georgia and was left out of the College Football Playoff despite wins over Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Vanderbilt. It’s the first time since 2022 that the Longhorns have been left out of the College Football Playoff and failed to play for its conference championship.
The Longhorns will have plenty to do in the offseason ahead of 2026, including preparing for what is likely Arch Manning’s final season plus replacing defensive standouts like Michael Taaffe, Ethan Burke, and several others.
The program will be making changes throughout the offseason after signing the No. 10 class according to Rivals. The transfer portal opens on January 2, and the Longhorns will undoubtedly be active in that portion of the talent acquisition cycle.
